What Causes That Annoying Hum?

A ceiling fan should operate with a gentle, barely audible hum of air movement. When that hum turns into a loud, electrical buzzing or grinding sound, you know you have a problem. Electrical humming is incredibly common, and it usually stems from the motor or the controls. Here's what our motor repair technicians typically look for.

1. A Blown Starting Capacitor

If your fan hums loudly when you turn it on but refuses to spin (or spins very sluggishly), you almost certainly have a blown starting capacitor. The capacitor gives the motor the initial jolt of electricity it needs to start turning. We carry universal replacement capacitors on our trucks and can usually fix this issue in less than an hour.

2. Incompatible Wall Switches

Are you using a standard dimmer switch to control your ceiling fan's speed? This is a huge mistake. Standard dimmers reduce voltage in a way that causes fan motors to hum loudly and eventually burn out. You must use a dedicated, stepped fan speed control. We can quickly replace your incompatible dimmer with the correct wall switch.

3. Loose Motor Screws or Bearings

Sometimes the hum is actually a mechanical vibration. Loose screws on the motor housing can rattle rapidly, creating a buzzing sound. Alternatively, if the sealed bearings inside the motor are failing, they can grind. We can tighten the housing and assess whether the motor bearings are salvageable.
